The objective of EMXYS with the development of the project is an exhaustive investigation into the implementation of an optical transceiver based on an infrared laser to be mounted as a payload on a micro or mini satellite.
EMXYS has found it necessary to introduce a solution for the establishment of communication links from low orbits to ground stations to meet the demand of some 300 companies that are preparing to launch micros and mini satellites at a rate of about 500 units per year. The clear evolution in telecommunications systems is to tend to develop transceivers based on RF bands increasingly closer to infrared light. However, these systems, which far surpass radio frequency systems in performance and capacity to establish links, require complex and heavy mechanics to direct the light beam with great precision to the receiving station.
This project will develop a communication system based on infrared light at 1500nm with no moving parts and no reduction in pointing capabilities, greatly reducing its mass and volume.
